Finishing the Recruiting Binder

9/22/2016

Today, I worked on finishing up the recruiting binder and putting in new recruits. I was able to add in several more recruits and evaluate their film as well. The exciting part of this is knowing that I am getting to be part of building the next class here at Ohio Northern and hopefully putting together a championship team in the near future. There were a few hiccups in the binder as I went in to add in new recruits that I was able to fix for the coaching staff as I found them. Some of the recruits that were already listed in the database were listed under the wrong school which could have been very bad for the university. No coach wants to call a school looking for a particular athlete just to find out he is calling the wrong school. What I did was go in and correct the schools where athletes were listed at. Several that I had found were listed under the right school name just the wrong area in which the school is located. This will happen from time to time with so many schools having the same name. When I return I will be going back through the binder to ensure that all the recruits are listed at the right school and then hopefully sitting down with the coach and starting to reach out to some of the recruits that we have thought so highly of.

Adding in New Recruits

In early again and ready to get started this morning. This morning I went through the recruiting binder again and started adding in new recruits through another website that Ohio Northern uses for when high school athletes that are interested in coming to Ohio Northern to play. So I started at the beginning of the binder with Ashland High School and started looking to see if any players had been added. If a player had been added, I will put their name into the binder and then pull up film to watch and evaluate them based on Ohio Northern rating system for each player.
While I was not in as long as I wanted to be today, I was able to get done with over half of the binder and added in a few new names and was able to watch some film on them as well. Learning how to use and operate all the different software programs that ONU uses is going to be a big tool later down the road when I get the opportunity to interview with other schools and will also be a great addition to my resume.

Analyzing film

Today was the only day I was able to come in this week so I needed to make today count. When I got in I grabbed my recruiting binder and got to work analyzing film on new potential recruits. As I sorted through page after page I was able to come across a few players that I knew that I had found a few players that would be able to come in and make an impact at Ohio Northern if they were to choose to come to school here. When I am analyzing the film I am looking for athletes that stand out. I am also looking for basic fundamentals but the players that stick out on film will also be the ones that offer that little something extra. I also spend time reviewing their GPA and noting this along with their ACT score if they have taken it. After six hours of reviewing film, I was able to put together some great notes on some really good players. I unfortunately won’t be back in until next week as the team is leaving tomorrow to head out for their first game of the year against Utica College in Utica, New York.

My oops day.

Today when I came in I had three more counties to add to the recruiting binder which was about twenty more schools to add. This meant that I needed to research more recruits and add in more recruits from the all-conference list and all district list as well. This again was very time consuming but once I finished I would be able to get back to reviewing more film and helping give Coach Paul another set of eyes for new recruits.

Once I finished up I was able to start reviewing highlights of the recruits once again. I got through two schools and then came to my opp’s moment. As I started looking up a recruit, I was not able to find any information on this particular recruit. So, thinking that this was just an odd thing, I found the same thing with the next recruit and then a third in a row. At this point, I became very concerned as to why I am not finding any information about these recruits. So I went to another school that was in the same conference and this is where I found I had made a mistake. When searching for my all-conference list, I downloaded a list that was older than what I needed. What this did was give me kids that had already graduated high school and this was why I was not able to find them when searching for them in the different tools provided. While this wasn’t a major mistake, it was a little time consuming to fix. Luckily, the conference only had 6 teams that Coach Paul was recruiting from, so all I had to do is fill out a new recruiting form and fill back in the information that was correct. Now when I come back in I have to find an updated all-conference list and add in those new recruits to the list which should not take much time at all.
