Dean Paul
Head Coach
Ohio Northern University
Dean Paul is in his 13th season as head coach at Ohio Northern University.

Paul has energized the ONU football program since arriving in 2004, leading the Polar Bears to 84 victories and national rankings in 10 of his 12 seasons as head coach.

In 17 seasons as a head football coach at the Division III level, Paul has posted a 124-52 record, a winning percentage of .705.

Paul came to ONU after five highly successful seasons at Thomas More College in Crestview Hills, Ky.

He guided the Saints to a 40-12 record in five seasons and ranks eighth among the nation’s leaders in winning percentage among active coaches.

Paul led Thomas More to the 2001 playoffs, where the Saints defeated MacMurray 34-30 in the first round before falling to Wittenberg in the second round.

He is one of only two active Division III coaches to lead two different schools to playoff victories and he is the only active coach to win a road game at all nine OAC opponents.

Beginning with his first season in 1999, Paul led TMC to a 7-3 record after having posted just a 3-7 mark the previous year.

In 2000, the Saints went 9-1 and were ranked No. 28 by the AFCA.

Paul guided his 2001 team to a perfect 10-0 regular-season record, the third in school history as the team outscored its opponents by an overwhelming 389-133 margin. TMC finished 11-1 and a final ranking of No. 18 by the AFCA.

The 20-2 record over those two seasons is the best in TMC history, as is the Saints’ 17-game winning streak during that time.

Paul has had 26 All-America selections in his 15 seasons as head coach.

In the classroom, his ONU team improved its overall grade point average from a 2.25 to a 2.68 in just the first three quarters under Paul. This past spring quarter, the ONU football team had a combined GPA of 2.865, better than the national student body average of 2.73.

He serves as a voting member on the D3Football.com poll and serves on the AFCA Football Council.

A four-year letterman at Mt. Union, he was named All-OAC in 1988 and 1990 and served as a team captain during his junior and senior seasons.

He ranks ninth all-time at Mt. Union with 2,013 career rushing yards and is sixth with a career average of 93.6 yards per game.

His first collegiate coaching job came when he coached the running backs at Allegheny (Pa.) from 1991-92, helping the Gators to 19 victories in those two seasons.

He also was an assistant coach at Tulane in 1993 and 1994, at Wooster from 1995-97 and at Fordham in 1998 before taking over as head coach at TMC in 1999.

A native of Garrettsville, Ohio, Dean Bradley Paul received his Bachelor of Science degree in Sports Management from Mt. Union in 1990.

He and his wife, Tonya, have a daughter, Kendra, a junior at ONU, and two sons, Bryce and Brandon.
