I started work on Coach Krepps recruiting today. He has asked me to find phone numbers and email address for coaches that he did not have along with some recruits for schools that he did not have any information from. So, what I focused solely on today was going through the schools that he needed coaching information on. Since it is difficult to get information on recruits if you don’t have the necessary coach’s information I thought that this would be the most important thing to work on right away. I spent most of the day just going through school’s websites searching for email address and then on some college recruiting websites looking for email address and phone numbers as well. I was able to get all the email address for the coaches but was not able to secure the phone numbers for all of them. I missed out on about five coaches for their phone numbers. So hopefully this is something that we will be able to get as we start to contact them about their student-athletes.

I spent all day today working on and finishing up Coach Schmitz’s recruiting territory. I was able to finish up close to twenty schools today while also getting some good information from some of the schools on some student-athletes that they had that would be interested in talking with Ohio Northern about continuing their education and their football career as well. While working on Coach Schmitz’s recruiting profile, I was also still working on contacting some coaches for Coach Paul as well. Most of the coaches I had responded but there were still a few that I had not had contact with. So, what I did was e-mail them again asking for any information on players that they thought we would be interested in so now I just wait and see if I get a response. If not I will email them again next week. Persistence I have found out is the key with some high school coaches because a lot of them do not like to discuss players during the season and want to wait until the season is over. Since I was able to finish up Coach Schmitz’s recruiting profile for him, I will start to work on Coach Krepps recruiting profile as well and give him some information that he is lacking.
Today I spent a few more hours working on recruiting Northeast Ohio for Coach Schmitz. I am winding down with his territory and will start on a new territory by weeks end. However, today, the schools that I was focusing on was non priority schools with a few priority schools sprinkled in. In those priority schools I was able to locate a few student-athletes that have not been offered by any schools as of yet which is good for Ohio Northern. Add on that some of these players play at a high level of competition and would add a lot of good experience to the football program. A few play on the offensive line where we are already young so building depth this year and the next will be a necessity for the program going forward. This is where I hope I will be able to help since I know a few things about the offensive line.
Nothing much new today other than finding it hard to navigate some of these smaller schools. Even though technology has come a long way, many of these school do not have updated websites and to add on to that they play in conferences that do not have websites. Without a conference website I have to try and hunt down articles where the all conference teams are listed. So what should only take 10-15 minutes hunting down student-athletes is now taking up to 45 minutes and sending out a lot of emails to Athletic Directors and sports writers to see if anyone has a list of the all conference teams. Another slow down has been the schools in Akron. They are all listed under the Akron City schools website which is not very well maintained at all and makes it almost impossible to find a coaches email address. None the less, I kept plugging away looking for the next stand out student and athlete for Ohio Northern.
So today, I am was given the task to helping Coach Mike Schmitz. Coach Schmitz works the north eastern part of Ohio when he is recruiting. Here I will be looking at the smaller schools again finding and updating any coaching changes and looking at new and potential recruits. The best part of this is that I get to learn about these new schools and discover hidden talent that are at these small schools. It is a double edge sword sometimes because at smaller schools they are not often playing against top talent but this does not mean they cannot play at the next level. I haven't counted how many different schools I will be looking at but a rough estimate is between 30 and 40 different schools. I will be doing the same thing for Coach Schmitz that I did for Coach Paul. I will hunt down the all conference players and look to see if we already have them in our recruiting database and if they are not I will evaluate them and then add them in. I'm guessing that I will on this recruiting binder for at least a good week but I already have other coaches lined up waiting for me to look at schools for them as well.
I was able to finish up the counties in which Coach Scheutzow had given me to update and find new recruits for him. While there was not a whole lot of recruits from the schools that I was given, I was able to find a few student-athletes that could be very beneficial to Ohio Northern and the football program. Once I handed over the recruiting papers to Coach, I went ahead and started contacting the high school coaches that I had yet to hear back from on the recruits for Coach Paul. Unfortunately, I only hear back from one coach but it was the one I really wanted to hear from. This particular recruit plays quarterback but because of his stature I wanted to recruit him purely as an athlete. The reason being is that from the quarterback position he has also rushed for over 1,300 yards and 23 touchdowns and the season isn't even over. The one thing that I really like about the student-athlete is that he is a winner and fights hard to make sure his team wins. Add on he is also a great student and already knows what he wants to study.
Today, concluded a busy week for me and recruiting here at Ohio Northern. As I mentioned yesterday, I was given another five counties to go over and find new recruits for. After spending a long day researching each school I was able to get everything done. Some schools were a little easier to do such as Clinton-Massie and Bethel-Tate because they are a little more well-known high schools. However, what often takes time is smaller schools like Cincinnati Christian Schools and New Miami Schools. Unfortunately, I had to spend an extra amount of time on a school like Cincinnati Christian just to find out that they were not able to field a team this year because they only had 13 kids come out to play football and as of now the school has suspended the football program until they feel they can get enough kids to play to field a suitable team. While it is sad for the program, it often takes up my time because I have to research to find these things out instead of spending time reviewing film of other student athletes that we may want to recruit. None the less, I was able to put in enough time to get all of the schools done and entered into Front Rush and research those that were in Scouting Ohio as well.
Today was a great day! I finally completed the recruiting binder, to an extent, and was able to move on to helping out another coach with his recruiting binder. What I mean by an extent is, I am still waiting to hear from a few high school head coaches to get contact information on a few players that we have been keeping our eyes on. Also, since I have become invested in some of these high school student athletes, I have been watching their games each week to see how they have performed and if any of them have suffered any setbacks. Anyhow, I had Coach Scheutzow give me five of his recruiting counties to get them up to date for him as well. While they were not the big schools, it is great to get acquainted with some of these smaller schools that I had not previously heard much of. Also, getting to know the head coaches at these schools also is great for networking opportunities in the near future. While I did not get a whole lot done for Coach Scheutzow today, when I come in tomorrow I will be able to knock out the remaining counties and get these players entered into Front Rush so that he will be able to look closer at the student athletes.
I went in today for only four hours but was able to make the most of my time while I was there. Today, I continued recruiting and talking with some more head coaches about players that they had that they felt would be a good fit at the next level. I was able to view the players that they had sent over via hudl.com and then get them put into Front Rush as well. What I also did today was take on the project of finding new talent. In the recruiting binder we have more than several schools that did not have any student-athletes. What we normally do is look at the All Conference teams and then add the juniors to the recruiting lists. However, these schools did not have any All Conference players so I needed to do some checking in on the schools to find out what kind of players that they had. I was able to get through several of the schools by going to their Hudl page and reviewing film of them. I will be picking up tomorrow where I left off and will hopefully also hear back from some of the other coaches that I have not heard back from yet.
Today, I went back through the recruiting binder to look up the 3 star and above recruits. As I came upon them I double checked for their information. If we did not have an email address listed or a cell phone number down for them I would make a note. As I went through the binder, I came up with about 15 players that I needed to get some more contact information for. At this point, this is when I attempted to contact the head coaches of these players to obtain this information.
As most know, some head coaches are already employed by the school as teachers or administrators, however, about half of what I came up with held outside employment which makes it a little more difficult to get in touch with the coach. None the less, I was able to at least email the athletic directors or leave a message at the school for the coaches. Out of the 15 student athletes that I was reaching out about I was able to update contact information on about 75% of them. The best part was talking with the head coach for Tiffin Calver, he provided me with some more information about other players that he had that he felt would fit in at Ohio Northern. So I was able to get them in the system and will now have to evaluate their film that they have on hudl. |
